Harley Murphy
TERRA ALTA, W.Va. — Harley Andrew Murphy, 80, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Sunday, March 24, 2019, at Preston Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born May 28, 1938, in Oakland, a son of the late William and Lucy (Bowman) Murphy.
Harley was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a retired Maryland State Road worker and loved cutting wood and spending time with his family.
He is survived by six sons, William Murphy, Accident, Ronald Murphy and companion Brenda, Oakland, Harley Murphy Jr. and companion Doris, Westernport, Robert (Dee) Murphy Sr., Oakland, Keith (Brenda) Murphy, Terra Alta and Cody (Kristy) Murphy, Friendsville; three daughters, Brenda Porter, Sandy Murphy and companion Kenny and Linda Rodeheaver, all of Terra Alta; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and a sister, Dolly Moats, Terra Alta.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 62 years, Norma Jean (Ashby) Murphy; a daughter, Donna Jean Fike, a daughter-in-law, Theresa Murphy; three sons-in-law, Howard Sisler, Russell Fike and Bobby Porter; a great-grandson, Bryson H. Rodeheaver; three brothers; and five sisters.
Family and friends will be received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home in Terra Alta on Wednesday, March 27, from 4-8 p.m. and on Thursday, March 28, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. time of service, with Rev. Stanley Waybright officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mt, Zion Cemetery, Swanton.

Transcrip of the Will of John Lay - Coppersmith York PA 1770 - 1844
In the name of God Amen I John Lay of the borough of York in the county of York and the state of Pennsylvania in good health and of sound mind and memory do made and publish this my last will and testament. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Peggy, one hundred dollars, to be paid her by my executor as soon as convenient after my decease, as a specific legacy.
I will order and direct that, as soon as that much money can be raised out of my estate, my executor herein after appointed, put out at interest the sum of Five Hundred dollars and pay the interest thereof, annually, to my said wife Peggy, during her life, and immediately after her death divide the principal amongst my sons Charles Josiah George and the two sons of my daughter Sarah, to wit Hamilton and Edmund Braun, they jointly to have their mother's share.
I will further order and direct that my said wife Peggy shall have all and singular the articles of household and kitchen furniture including bedsteads and bed clothing that she bought to me after our intermarriage, but in the event she should not survive me, then in that case the same shall be equally divided amongst her children after my decease, and that my said wife shall occupy my dwelling house until she can conveniently get into her own house - and to have all the flour and meat left at my death.
I give and bequeath to my son George my family bible containing my family record, as a specific legacy.
I give and bequeath to Hamilton Braun and Edmund Braun my grandsons, the bedstead and bed clothing which were used by their mother during her life, and may be distinguished by being marked with the initials of the name of my said daughter.
I give and bequeath to Eliza the sum of Fifty Dollars and my small stove and pipe as a specific legacy.
I give and bequeath to my sisters Dorothy Fachender and Christiana Fachender the sum of Fifty dollars, each, but in the event of either one or both of them should not survive me then these legacies shall revert to my estate, and be distributed to and amongst my sons and grandchildren upon the same principal and proportion as I shall herein direct with regard to the residue of my estate.
I will order and direct, that, all my wearing apparel be equally devided between my three sons, Charles Josiah & George, according to the appraised value thereof in such manner that each shall have an equal share of the good and bad articles.
I will order and direct that as soon as possible after my decease, my executor herein after appointed to sell at public sale all and singular my real estate wheresoever situated and by conveying the same to the purchaser or purchasers thereof; and also sell all my personal property not before given and disposed of in this my will, collect all moneys owed my estate and after paying my just debts, funeral and other expenses incidental to settling my estate; the balance then remaining of my said residing estate I will give and bequeath one fourth share of the said balance to the lawful children of my said son Charles Lay. that may be living at the time of my death and such as he may afterwards have, and I hereby appoint my son Charles Lay, guardian over his children.
I give and bequeath to my son Josiah one fourth share of the balance of my residuary estate, or to his lawful heirs in case he should not be living; but I charge him the said Josiah with and advancement of Fifty dollars as the value of the coppersmith tools which I have given him and for which he shall account to my executor in receiving distribution share, and also my surtout coat and my new bed quilt.
I give and bequeath to my son George Lay one fourth share of my said residuary estate.
I give and bequeath to my grandsons Hamilton Braun and Edmund Braun each one eighth share of the said balance of my residuary estate.
I hereby appoint Philip Smyser Esquire of York guardian of the persons and estates of my said grandsons, Hamilton Braun and Edmund Braun. I also nominate constitute and appoint Philip Smyser Esq executor of this my last will and testament, and I do hereby revoke all other wills by me heretofore made and declare this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I set my hand and seal this seventeenth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and forty one.
First Codicil
I John Lay of the Borough of York, County of York and state of Pennsylvania, the above named testator do hereby declare this codicil a part of my last will and testament as follows.
First -It is my will that the sum of Fifty dollars charged to my son Josiah Lay is not to be charged to him, but I give the same absolutely.
Second - It is my will that the sum of Fifty dollars which I have given and bequeathed to my sister Dorothy Fachender, I give to her daughter Eliza
Thirdly - It is my will that the legacy of Fifty dollars bequeathed to my sister Christiana Fachender and named in my will I give to her daughter in law, Hetty Fachender, the wife of James Fachender for her sole use if the said Christiana should die before me and if not the said Hetty is to have it.
Fourthly - It is my will that the last carpet my wife made is to hers and also one brass kettle, her choice, and the three quart kettle which I give her absolutely in addition to what I have already given her.
Lastly - It is my will and I wish it to be understood that my grandchildred born of my daughter Sarah and named Hamilton Braun and Edmund Braun are to have equal fourth part of all my estate after debts and special legacies are paid.
In witness whereof I John Lay have set my hand and seal this 23rd Day of November AD 1842.
Second Codicil
I John Lay of the Borough of York in the County of York and the state of Pennsylvania, the testator named to annexed will do hereby declare this second codicil annexed to my last will and testament bearing date seventeenth day of February AD one thousand eight hundred and forty one to be a part of my last will and testament as follows;
It is my will and I wish it to be understood that the share and part of my estate willed and bequeathed to the children of my son Charles Lay as mentioned in my last will, I give and bequeath the same to my son to my son Charles Lay absolutely if he be living at my death and if not living at my death to his children to be divided amongst them equally.
In witness etc etc 18th November 1843.
