VIRGIL B. HARRIS, JR. (Age 81)
Of Oakton, VA on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at home; a native of West Virginia, Virgil graduated from Green Bank High School, prior to serving in the United States Air Force. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts Education from the West Virginia Institute of Technology. A pillar of the community, Virgil served voluntarily over 50 years as Chairman of the Board at Apple Federal Credit Union. He helped create the Apple FCU Education Foundation in 2006 where he also served as Chairman. The legacy Virgil leaves behind is one of honor and selflessness. On February 27, 2011 Apple dedicated its headquarters in Fairfax, VA to him, naming the facility The Virgil B. Harris, Jr. Building. His career included more than 30 years with Fairfax County Public Schools. He taught industrial arts at Annandale High School before serving 11 years as Director of Maintenance and Plant Operations and Director of Safety for 12 years before retiring in 1983. He holds lifetime memberships in the national Education Association and the Virginia Retired Teachers Association. A Member of Fairfax Baptist Church for over 45 years, Virgil served as Sunday School Superintendent, Greeter, and Deacon.
Beloved husband of Diane Harris; devoted father of Rachael (Wendy) and Michael; son of the late Virgil and Macel Harris; brother of George Harris (Martha), Nancy Palmer (Joe), Jenny Smith (Harry), and John Harris (Karen). He is also survived by five grandchildren, Ian, Anna and Cooper Millholland, Megan and Chad Gerald; many nieces, nephews, family and friends who adored him. Friends may call at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Rd., Fairfax, VA on Friday, May 11, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Fairfax Baptist Church, 10830 Main Street, Fairfax, VA on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Interment Fairfax Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to AFCU Education Foundation, Attn: Virgil B. Harris Jr. Memorial, 4029 Ridge Top Rd., Suite 320, Fairfax, VA 22030.
