Obituary:
John Ramsey Smith, Jr., known as “Mr.” by friends and family, went to be with his Lord and
Savior April 6, 2018.
John, born July 20, 1930 in Deer Park, MD, was the son of the late John Ramsey Smith, Sr. and
Nora Evelyn Glotfelty. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Billie Fedora
Hinebaugh, his brothers; Stanley Adrian Smith, Leo Clayton Smith and Thomas Calvin Smith, as well
as two sisters in law, Janet Malinda (Campbell) Smith and Lorena Grace (Fitzwater) Smith.
“Mr.” was survived by his sons, Michael James Smith (and wife Kathy Ann (Filer) Smith) and
Patrick Thomas Smith and daughters Jo Lynn (Smith) Sullivan (and husband Patrick Lawrence Sullivan) and Judith Ann Smith (and husband Eric Johnson). He is also survived by four grandchildren,
Sean Michael Smith (and wife Emily), Brendan John Sullivan, Emma Gustav Smith, Buddy Johnson,
two nephews Richard S. Smith, James Patrick Smith and once niece, Cheryl Lorena Smith, and close
family friends, Charlie Mulligan, and Dick and Lois Sluss. “Mr.” was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved playing cards at the Frostburg Heights, the Frostburg Senior Center and with his children. He was known for his skill in wood working and refinishing antique furniture. Friends and family were blessed with his skills and will cherish the numerous pieces he made and restored. At the young age of 76, he began cutting wood fire several times a week, with his best friend Dr. Gary Wagoner and brother John Franklin Wagoner, under the watchful eyes of Wilma Wagoner. John was
blessed to have a close friend, Hila Hines, with whom he shared time and companionship.
John worked for the B&O and CSX railroads for 42 years retiring in 1989. He started as a tower operated in Garrett County, was promoted to a train dispatcher before eventually becoming Chief Dispatcher of the Cumberland District for over twenty years. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was of the last original member of the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department. He attended the Cresaptown United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years and served as a trustee at the end of his life.
Friends and family will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, April 8, 2018. A funeral service with Rev. Scott Knowlton and Rev. Harold McClay will be held at the funeral home on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Deer Park Cemetery, Deer Park, MD.
Michael James Smith, Patrick Thomas Smith, Patrick Lawrence Sullivan, Brendan John Sullivan, Brian Sullivan and Eric Johnson will serve as pall bears, with Gary Wagoner, John Wagoner and Wilma Wagoner serving as honorary pall bearers.
