This is a beautiful scan of my Great Great Grandfather, George William Ashby (5 Nov 1847 - 25 Apr 1927). Born in Hardy County.,WV, he was the oldest son of Abraham and Mary Louisa. On 17 Nov 1859 in Grant County, WV, he married Sarah Arnold "Sallie" Carnell. He gave up the family tradition of farming, trading it in for working in a Tannery. In 1900 census he is listed as working in Flesher Tannery in New Creek, WV. Widowed at age 62, he is seen in 1910 living with son Clarence and both were labors in a Tannery. But in Aug of 1911, a News paper article says he managed an orchard and killed 68 poisonous snakes, 8 rattlers and the rest copperheads He passed at age 79.
