Excerpts from The Ten Tribes of David by Lewis Ogden Stiles dated 1939
Descendants of David Stiles son of Thomas Stiles
Than these four words no other may be more properly placed at the beginning of this history. As this is read throughout the years may every reader pause at these words: KEEP UP THE RECORD.
All that is written in this book or elsewhere concerning this truly wonderful family will be forever lost to that person or to that family permitting a link to be broken in the chain of proof, so carefully forged, which connects with the original stock. As the years pass members of our Kentucky family will become to numerous, perhaps, to be included in any one volume but it is to be hopped that in each branch some one will embrace the task of keeping a complete record within that branch with an unbroken line of descent.
I have neighbors bearing the name, Stiles, who know nothing of their ancestry beyond their grandparents an my own efforts to connect them with the family have been in vain.
Personally I knew little more of my own family, until called into a family reunion in 1936 by Margaret Wilson LaRue, Mina Wilson LaRue and Lafayette Stiles Pence, and having always felt a warm affection for those within the family who it was my good fortune to know, I became interested and during the three years following accumulated what is found in this volume. About the same time it came to my knowledge that the ancestry of the Kentucky Family was historically recorded, showing an unbroken connection with the Colonial volumes procurable only at considerable cost which some might consider as prohibitive. It appeared to me highly desirable that all data pertaining to the Kentucky branch be made available to all of its members in one volume at a greatly reduced cost This I undertook to accomplish. Incidentally, so far as possible, later offspring has been added.
