SHINNSTON — Dorothy “Dotty” Sharp, 81, of Shinnston, passed away at her residence on November 3, 2009, following an extended illness.
She was born on September 6, 1928, on Shinn’s Run, a daughter of the late Carl L. and Chloe Looman Nuzum.
Mrs. Sharp was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Stanley Sharp, whom she married on November 9, 1946.
She is survived by her son, Stephen M. Sharp and his wife Marlene of Fishers, IN; grandson, Andrew M. Sharp of Indianapolis, IN; brother, Carl Nuzum Jr. of Shinnston; and twin sister, Betty Talerico of Bridgeport.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Sharp was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack and Dale Nuzum; and her sister, Virginia Stalnaker.
She graduated from Mannington High School. She then went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree from Fairmont State College and her Master’s Degree from West Virginia University.
Mrs. Sharp was employed by Westinghouse in Fairmont as well as the Harrison County Board of Education. She retired as a school teacher after her career at the Point Comfort Grade School, Wyatt Grade School and the Shinnston Grade School. She was a member of the Christ Church United Methodist on Main Street in Shinnston where she held several offices including Youth Fellowship Teacher, Sunday School Teacher, Secretary/Treasurer (12 years), Historian, as well as being the pianist.
She was also a member of the Courtesy Squares Square Dance Club. She enjoyed the Kitchen Band and Line Dancing at Holiday Park in Holiday, FL, and clogging. Mrs. Sharp was also an avid baseball fan.
The family would like to extend a thank you to the excellent care she received by her caregivers.
Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston on Thursday from 5-9 p.m. and Friday from noon-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, November 7, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Brian Plum officiating. Interment will follow at the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Christ Church United Methodist at 68 Main St., Shinnston, WV 26431 or the American Cancer Society at 300 Scott Avenue, Morgantown, WV 26508.
