George R. Fortney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard E. Fortney of Enterprise, will be formally initiated into the West Virginia Chapter of Alpha Zeta, National Honorary Fraternity, at West Virginia University March 29th.

The basis for elevation to Alpha Zeta is outstanding scholastic achievement, leadership in any Agricultural field, the unanimous election by the active members of the faculty advisory committee.


Fortney will graduate June 1st from the university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture.


After graduation from Shinnston high school in the class of 1938, he attended Potomac State School Keyser and graduated in the spring of 1940. In the fall he entered the university and was inducted on October 9, 1941 in the United States Army.

He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. at Camp Barkley, Texas, in the Medical Administrative corps on Dec 19, 1942, and also graduated From the Finance School of duke University, Durham, N.C. He was then assigned to administrative duties at Camp Pickett, VA, Ashford General Hospital, White Sulphur Springs, and the 118th General Hospital at Tacloban Leyte, Philippine Islands.

He has received the American Theater service medal the American Defense service medal, Asiatic Pacific service medal and World War II Victory medal.


Fortney completed his tour of active duty February 5, 1946 and is now a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve. He will enter Harvard University, Cambridge Mass. in September for graduate work.
