Elwood WiltBorn: Mon., Aug. 4, 1930

Died:Mon., Jan. 13, 2014 Elwood Wilt, 83, of Oakland died peacefully on January 13, 2014 at his home. Born on August 4, 1930 in Oakland, he was the son of the late Porter Wilt and Helen (Tasker) Wilt. He is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Bittinger and husband Wayne of Oakland; one son, Donald Wilt of Atlanta, GA; 5 grandchildren, Christopher Bittinger of Oakland, Michael Bittinger and wife Beth of Wheeling, WV, and Jennifer, Steven, and Brandon Wilt of Atlanta; and 3 great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Bittinger of Oakland, and Michael and Nathan Bittinger of Wheeling. He is also survived by one brother, Lloyd, of Oakland, and sisters, Mabel Stiles and Mary Humberson, of Kingwood, WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Delores (Paugh) Wilt, in 2010 and three brothers, Charles Wilt, Harvey Wilt, and Lawrence Wilt. Elwood was a lifelong resident of Oakland and worked as an electrician at Shirer's Heating and Electric and Tin Shop, from 1950 to April 1963. He then worked as a tax assessor for the MD State Dept. of Assessments & Taxation from April 1963 until he retired in August 1992. Elwood was a woodworker and learned the trade from his father. Many people in Garrett County have items that he made for them. In his younger years, he loved to hunt, was very active in softball leagues in the area, coaching and playing, and was in a bowling league for many years. He loved Braves baseball and followed them from Boston to Milwaukee to Atlanta. He also liked to work on his farm, always building fences and clearing brush. Elwood loved Thursday morning breakfasts with his brother Lloyd and Sunday morning breakfasts with his sisters, Mabel and Mary. He took pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and liked spending as much time with them as possible. He and his loving wife also took great pride in financially ensuring that their kids and grandkids got the college educations they wanted. He had also carried on her tradition of sending out many Christmas cards to friends and family and baking dozens of Christmas cookies. He will be missed by many. Friends will be received at the Burdock - Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. 2nd St. in Oakland, on Wednesday, January 15th from 6 to 8 PM and on Thursday, January 16th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1 PM on Friday January 17th. Interment will follow in the Garrett Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
