Information from Matt Cumberledge provided by Dan Shane:

A man 71 years of age hung himself in his barn. His name is Benjamin Stiles. He owned about 200 acres of good farming land, and did not owe a dollar in the world. He owed a young man 25 cents, which he paid a few hours before he committed the rash act, remarking at the time that it was all he owed to anyone. His wife had gone to the neighbors house after dinner and did not return until late evening, when they missed him and on making a search found him hanging, as stated above. Silas Haught Esq., was notified and the the following jury was summoned by Constable S. Barnard, J. H. Morris, Thomas Wise, Alfred Sanders, John Hildebrand, Nicolas Harker, Milo Strosnider, W. J. Tennant, S. B. Harker, W. J. Eakin, and David B. Hawker, after being duly sworn and having the evidence of Dr. A. B. Mason, Anderson Cumberledge, Isaac Cumberledge, and Mark Stiles, rendered the following verdict;

County of Monongalia, state of West Virginia, to wit:

An inquest taken at the house of Benjamin Stiles in the County of Monongalia, state of West Virginia, Jun. 21st, 1877 before Silas Haught, a justice of Battelle district, in said County of Monongalia, upon the view of the body Benjamin Stiles there lying dead of. The jurors sworn to inquire when, how, and by what means the said Benjamin Stiles, came to his death upon their oaths, do say, that after having the testimony of the witnesses (and also the physician) they are of the opinion, that Benjamin Stiles came to his death, by his own hands by hanging on the 20th day of June, between hours of 1 PM and 8 PM of the 20th day of June 1877 in his barn or stable, on his own farm, in the County of Monongalia, state of West Virginia.

Signed by the jury and Silas Haught, Justice of Battelle district
