In Census of 1970 Stephen and his wife Mary A. were living in Battile District of Monongalia county
with Levi C. Stiles living at home listed as being age of 27.
In Census of 1880 Stephen was living in Battile District of Monongalia County
alone since his wife Mary had died in 1876.
Levi was living next door with his wife Delila and one child John L. Stiles age 3

Stephen Stiles was born about 1800 on the Homestead belonging to his father near Wana, in Monongalia County, Virginia. He grew up in this vicinity where he married Mary a. Wise, born about 1801 in Maryland the daughter of George and Jane Wise. Mary died May 11, 1875. Stephen purchased a tract of land in Marion County, WV  and he and Mary moved to Marion County and settled in the Metz area on the west fork of Campbells Run, later to be known locally as Stiles Run. Stephen prior to 1864  transferred the title of all of his land that he owned in Marion County to his son John and daughter, Elizabeth then moved back to Monongalia County to live on the land he received in the Will of William Stiles, his father in 1852. Here he died about 1880 noting the date of probate of his will on 18 November 1880 the date of probate of his will on 18 November 1880. Neither of these deeds in Marion County were recorded at the date of transfer of ownership to his children John and Elizabeth.
Sometime after the birth of Stephen Nelson Stiles the son of John and Sarah Stiles, John decided to take his family and make the move west with his in laws, Park family. He financed the move by selling some his land holdings in and around Mets, WV. Sarah died on October 29, 1864 and by verbal family history Sarah died just after arriving in Iowa. I have not been able to find where she is buried so it is not clear if she died prior to leaving WV or after arriving in IA. John did not stay in IA but returned to WV immediately leaving his son, Stephen Nelson with his grandparents in IA. Though an arranged marriage John married on May 4, 1865 to Anna McCoy Moore , a widow with two small children.
John and Anna lived on the left fork of Campbells Run (Stiles Run) just outside of Metz, WV on a small farm which John owned.  They lived here until John's death on Jun 15, 1899.

Since there were no deeds on record of the transfer of the land in Marion County from Stephen to John and his sister, Levi , John's brother claimed that Stephen's will probated in 1880 gave him title of the land in Marion County, WV.
John then had to take his siblings and spouses to court to obtain clear deeds since he had resold most ot eh properties prior to leaving WV for IA.
