Note for:   Melvin Delmount Stiles,   11 MAY 1873 - 19 AUG 1909         Index

Individual Note:
Melvin was retarded. He had the mental capacity of a young teenager. He seemed to

be a well adjusted but young and unreliable.

There is a family story about him going to Shinnston, WV from Bingamon, WV, about a 5 mile

walk. He made this trip with his nephew, John Nelson Stiles, every Saturday.

One Saturday morning John could not fine Melvin so he began looking for him so they could

make the trip to Shinnston. Finally John found Melvin and he was standing in a large copper pot

used to make apple butter. He had the bail over his shoulder. John ask him, "Melvin what are you doing?" and Melvin answered, "It is a long walk to Shinnston, so I thought I would just carry myself".

Every since that time when someone in the family does something that is not eactly racinal, the family says,

"That's just the Melvin in you."
