BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — Mary Jo Burton, 81, of Bonita Springs died Wednesday,
January 30, 2013, after a brief illness. She was born June 3, 1931, in Enterprise, WV,
a daughter of the late Rufus and Pauline (nee Pigott) Davis. Mary Jo had been a
resident of Bonita Springs for the past 32 years coming from Weirton, WV.
She graduated from Shinnston High School in 1949 as class Valedictorian and
then received her bachelor’s degree from West Liberty State College. Mary Jo
then continued her education at West Virginia University where she received her
Master’s degree in Education.
She began her teaching career at the elementary level and then moved to Weir Jr.
High in Weirton, WV, where she taught for 15 years. After moving to Florida, she
worked for the Collier County School System as a Guidance Counselor at Pinecrest
Elementary in Immokalee and retired in 1992.
She is survived by her loving husband, Chester Paul Burton of Bonita Springs;
two sons, Doug A. Burton of Bonita Springs and David P. (Terri) Burton of Goodman,
MO; two brothers, Rufus Davis, Jr. and John Davis; one sister, Barbara Belich; four
grandchildren, Candy Johnson, Angie Calhoun, Erika Burton and Bridget Burton and
six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters,
Jeanne, Marjorie and Ireta.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, from 10-11:30 a.m. at
Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home 28300 Tamiami Tr. So. Order of Eastern Star services
will be held at 11:30 a.m. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at Sarasota National
