Tunnelton Soldier's Wounding Described

The 29th General Hospital, England--

Wounded in the left leg and side by hand grenade shranel while carrying orders to his squad on the outskirts of Brest. Sergeant Lester H. Wilt Virginia, is now recovering at this United States Army general hospital in England.

Sgt Wilt's wounds are heeling satisfactorily and he probably will be returned to the United States for further hospitalization, said his ward surgeon, Major A. William Olson of Brooklyn, New York.

Sgt. Wilt, who has received the Purple Heart, was crossing an open field under German machine gun and mortar fire on the outskirts of Brest when a hand grenade which he had been carrying in his canteen cover exploded.

I was only about 75 yards from my company when it happened and a company and man came out and gave me first aid, said Sgt. Wilt. He was taken to a field hospital for further treatment and later evacuated to England by hospital ship.

Sgt. Wilt was employed by the Blake Coal Company before entering the Army in March, 1942. His parents Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Wilt reside at the Tunnelton address. His brother, Virgil is with the Navy in the South Pacific.
