This appears to have been the Miners' Hospital No. 3 operated by J. W. McDonald MD, and his
wife Mary (Sheetz) McDonald.
The Miner's Hospital was basically a miners' hospital specializing in mining injuries.
In 1899 the West Virginia Legislature passed an act providing for the establishment of three Miners' Hospitals: Miners' Hospital No. 1 to be located in the region of the Flat Top Coalfield, either in McDowell County of Mercer County; Miners' Hospital No. 2 in the New River Coal Field, in Fayette or Kanawha County; and Miners' Hospital No. 3 in the Fairmont Coal Field, in Marion County.
Of these hospitals, one was located at Welch, McDowell County; another at at McKendree, Fayette County; and a third at Fairmont in Marion County. To them were admitted and treated, free of charge, all persons injured in this State as a passenger on, or employee of , a railroad, or otherwise injured by a railroad train, or injured or hurt in a coal mine or the coal business. When there were room such other persons as have been injured were admitted at the actual cost of treatment; but preference was given to mine and railroad employees
